Description

Buffalo Horn, Abalone, Titanium, Stainless Steel and Blued Damascus come united together for Butch Vallotton's final creation. Stamped Butch Vallotton Custom Knives with the Vallotton Snake on the inner handle spine.

This 11" open stiletto knife had been set aside by the now retired Butch Vallotton for several years because it contained a special mechanism he had been working on to change the way traditional Italian Stilettos unlocked their blades. Butch recently finished this piece off giving it a few final touches and sent it to PVK. Traditional leaf spring fired Italian switchblades open easy enough with the push of a button and then closing the knife usually done by pressing to swivel on the frontside bolster - this action of rotating the squarish bolster on the pivot will lift the donut that is holding the blade open in the locked position. Many years ago that rotating bolster was the coolest idea anyone could remember in knife lock mechanisms - but that's because prior to that Italian Stilettos were called picklocks and you literally had to pick that lock up with your fingers to close your blade. The swivel bolster did slightly weaken and loosen up the whole business and the donut plan doesn't really work unless you have pretty strong callous fingers. This knife and it's neat little mechanism (the skull at the blade of the blade's top/spine) were a solution to the 100+ year old problem that Butch had come up with. To lift the donut and release the locked blade you press down on the skull. Though it needed further refinement to be a mass produced idea it certainly functions flawlessly on this beautiful prototype. Great Job Butch!
